high on health (51/2023) - Last Work Week, Another Family Birthday (and Accident), Good News in Healthcare in 2023, Remembering Flo-Jo

Cheers!

This is High on Health. Your weekly reminder of the healthy side of life - and in that spirit, this edition is a bit shorter, giving you more time to spend with your nearest and dearest during this festive season. โค๏ธ

So, I just wrapped up my final work trip of the year, and guess what? The train was nearly on time โ€“ a small victory, but I'll take it! ๐Ÿš† Big shoutout to Deutsche Bahn for keeping things rolling smoothly, despite the usual platform buzz. ๐Ÿ™Œ

The Dude feels meโ€ฆ

I carved out some buffer days for those last-minute year-end tasks this week. โณ But, as life would have it, those extra days vanished faster than holiday cookies at a family gathering. ๐Ÿช

Remember how we celebrated Karla turning four last week? Well, today, we hit another milestone โ€“ Tilda's 10th birthday! ๐ŸŽ‚๐ŸŽ‰ Our first leap into double digits. It's amazing how kids are like living, breathing time machines, right? ๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ Ten years ago, we were in a Manhattan hospital, waiting for our firstborn. Fast forward through a decade of adventures, missteps, and triumphs, and here we are, bursting with pride and excitement for the next ten. ๐ŸŒŸ

Tilda is a tremendous โ€œSwiftieโ€

In true 'life happens' fashion, our birthday morning kicked off with a power outage, and poor Karla had a little tumble down the stairs (non-connected incidents). ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ”Œ A traumatized milk tooth, a bleeding lip, and a bit of a scare, but she's tough. ๐Ÿ’ช The day's chaos didn't stop us from celebrating โ€“ just a reminder that life's little hiccups are part of the journey. ๐Ÿ›ค๏ธ

As we say goodbye to this year and the festive lights glow a little brighter, I'm hitting pause on the health-tech chatter to extend a massive thank you to each of you. ๐Ÿ™๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿค™ Whether you're a reader from the first edition or a newbie to my health newsletter, your engagement and support are the real gifts I cherish. ๐ŸŽ„

May the holiday season warmly wrap you, sprinkle you with joy, and usher you into a New Year filled with vibrant health and groundbreaking innovations. ๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿผโœจ Relish those moments that bring a smile, treasure the people who feel like home, and keep that spark of exploration alive into 2024. ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿฅ‚

Here's raising a glass to health, happiness, and a future teeming with possibilities. Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones! ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŽŠ

Stay high on health! ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŽ‰

Take care!

PS: I will take a week off to spend time with my family and focus on self-care. I will return for the 01/2024 edition of high on health.

Stuff Iโ€™m reading

2023 was a year of many positive healthcare-related news. Sometimes, those get blown over by all the loader news. The more important to point those out here!

Here is a list of good news in healthcare in 2023!

Welcome to the 'Golden Age' of Medicine

2023 has ushered us into an exhilarating era in medicine, one that's rewriting the rules and expectations of healthcare. We're riding a wave of medical innovation not seen in a century!

This 'golden age' is a silver lining of the Covid-19 pandemic. The leaps made in mRNA technology, initially a hero in Covid vaccines, are now setting their sights on beating certain cancers. But wait, thereโ€™s more โ€“ the realms of (Gen) AI and 3D printing are opening doors we never knew existed, and genomics is playing detective, unlocking the genetic secrets behind numerous diseases. This means treatments that are not just effective but custom-made for individual needs.

And it's not just about new drugs. AI is stepping up as a game-changer, turbocharging drug discovery and outpacing humans in pinpointing and identifying tumors in medical scans.

We're not just observing history; we're living it in a world where health possibilities are expanding like never before. Here's to living in an age where science fiction becomes our medical reality! ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ”ฌ

AIDS: The Countdown Begins

We're on the brink of turning the page on one of history's toughest health challenges. The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) dropped a major announcement: Aids could be history by 2030!

Here's the scoop: Over the past 30 years, advancements in HIV treatment have saved nearly 21 million lives. Plus, 2022 hit a record low with only 1.3 million new HIV infections - the lowest in decades. This isn't just a win for health; it's a triumph for communities worldwide, bolstering systems that protect millions from poverty and food insecurity.

This potential victory demands constant action. The end of Aids isn't just a health milestone; it's a chance for today's leaders to carve out a legacy of resilience and determination that will echo through generations. So, as we edge closer to this historic achievement, let's stay vigilant, informed, and committed to a world where Aids is a chapter in our history books, not our lives.

To a future free from Aids! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’ช

Eradicating the Eradicable

2023 has been a landmark year in the global fight against diseases. Countries worldwide have scored major victories, knocking out some of the most challenging health foes.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฉ Bangladesh's Triumph: Making headlines, Bangladesh achieved what's being celebrated as a "monumental achievement" by eliminating visceral leishmaniasis. This parasitic scourge, once a major public health concern, has been shown the door, marking a huge win for the country's health landscape.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ถ Iraq's Victory Over Trachoma: Iraq stepped into the spotlight as the 17th nation to say goodbye to trachoma, the top cause of infectious blindness worldwide. This is more than a medical success; it's a beacon of hope for millions at risk of this preventable blindness.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฟ Belize Goes Malaria-Free: Big cheers for Belize, officially declared malaria-free by the World Health Organization. This is a massive leap forward, especially considering the impact of malaria on communities globally. Plus, approving a new malaria vaccine, boasting up to 80% efficacy, is a game-changer. We're talking about a potential lifesaver for thousands, particularly children.

These milestones aren't just individual successes; they prove what we can achieve globally when we focus on combating public health challenges. Each victory brings us closer to a world where debilitating diseases are a thing of the past.

Alzheimerโ€™s: A Glimmer of Hope

2023 might just go down in history as the year we turned the tide against Alzheimerโ€™s. This year brought us very close to a new chapter in the battle against this daunting disease.

๐Ÿ”ฌ The Alzheimerโ€™s Breakthrough: Enter Donanemab and Lecanemab, the dynamic duo in Alzheimer's treatment. These drugs are making waves by attacking the amyloid protein build-ups in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer's. While they're not a cure, they promise to slow cognitive decline. This is big news!

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง A Turning Point in the UK: The UK is gearing up to approve these drugs in 2024, marking a significant milestone. With Alzheimer's expected to impact 1.7 million Brits by 2040, this development is a beacon of hope. We're on the brink of the first wave of Alzheimerโ€™s treatments โ€“ a dream that seemed out of reach just a decade ago. This isn't just progress; it's a revolution approaching a disease affecting millions of minds.

So, letโ€™s embrace this wave of optimism. We're stepping into an era where Alzheimer's doesn't have to be a one-way street. To a future where memories last longer! ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿง

Cancer Breakthroughs Galore

2023 has been a landmark year in the fight against cancer, bringing groundbreaking victories that reshape our approach to this devastating fate.

๐ŸŒŸ Cervical Cancer Breakthrough: The battle against cervical cancer saw a major win with a new treatment that's both cost-effective and highly efficient, hailed as the biggest leap in two decades.

๐ŸŒŸ Prostate Cancer Advancements: There's thrilling progress in treating prostate cancer, with new discoveries changing the game for patients worldwide.

๐ŸŒŸ Breast Cancer Prevention: In England, an old drug (Anastrozole) got the green light, promising to prevent breast cancer, a milestone in proactive health care.

๐ŸŒŸ Hopeful Statistics from the US: And here's a dose of hope โ€“ cancer death rates in the US have dropped by a third since 1991. It's a testament to the relentless efforts and advancements in cancer treatment.

2023 has been a year of triumphs in the cancer arena, moving us closer to a world where cancer is no longer a daunting diagnosis but a treatable condition. Here's to continued innovation and victories in our journey towards a cancer-free world! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’ช

Slow Down, Father Time!

2023 brought us closer to unlocking the age-old mystery: How do we slow aging? Good news โ€“ scientists have been busy piecing together the puzzle, and they've got some insights that might just be the keys to a longer, healthier life.

๐ŸŒŸ The Power of Eight: Researchers have identified eight essential lifestyle habits that could add up to 24 golden years to your life. Yes, you read that right โ€“ 24 years!

  1. Regular Exercise: No need to stress weekday workouts; weekend warriors, rejoice! Whether itโ€™s a leisurely bike ride or an intense gym session, fitting in your fitness is what counts.

  2. Eating Well: Embrace the Mediterranean diet. Think seafood, whole grains, fruits, nuts, veggies, and the ever-loved olive oil. It's not just delicious; it's a ticket to better health.

  3. Positive Relationships: Cherish your connections. Strong social ties arenโ€™t just good for your soul; they're gold for your health, reducing the risks of chronic diseases.

  4. Managing Stress: Set boundaries, take breaks, and maybe start a gratitude journal. Remember, itโ€™s about cultivating a positive, present mindset.

  5. Quality Sleep: Find your sleep sweet spot โ€“ it could be anywhere from six to eight hours. And don't let sleep anxiety be the thief of your nighttime peace.

  6. Moderate Drinking: Follow the golden rule of moderation. Enjoy your drinks, but keep it within healthy limits to stay on top of your game.

  7. No Smoking: Dropping the cigs is a boost to your health. There's plenty of support out there to help you quit.

  8. Steer Clear of Opioids (and anything related): If addictionโ€™s a challenge, remember, help is always available. Reach out and take that step towards a healthier you.

Each of these habits is a piece of the longevity puzzle. None of those should be surprising. The great news is it's never too late to start, and even adopting a few can make a significant difference. So, hereโ€™s to living longer, healthier, and happier lives! ๐ŸŒˆ๐ŸŒฟ

One more honorable mention: It has been a whirlwind year in the field of weight management, with Ozempic and similar drugs stealing the spotlight. Originally developed for diabetes treatment, these drugs have shown significant results in weight loss, making waves across various demographics and treatment areas. As more of these medications come to market, patients and doctors have noticed a noticeable surge in interest. People are actively seeking these drugs, and physicians are increasingly open to prescribing them.

Mental health professionals are now turning to these drugs to manage weight gain, which is often associated with mental health conditions. This fresh approach is gaining traction. Women experiencing menopause have found a new ally in these drugs. As menopause can often make weight loss challenging, these medications are offering a new ray of hope.

But that's not all. The scope of these drugs is expanding. Researchers have found that Wegovy, one of these medications, might reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes for some individuals. This is big news, as it opens up new possibilities for cardiovascular health management.

The growing interest in and applications of Ozempic and similar drugs mark a significant shift in treating not just diabetes and obesity but also in addressing broader health concerns. It's a rapidly evolving field, and we're here to keep you updated on all the latest developments.

What have been your health innovation highlights in 2023?

I would love to get your thoughts and comments!

Words Iโ€™m pondering

โ

Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.

Mahatma Gandhi

I have adopted this principle to live by since I decided to lead an intentional life. Many wise people such as the Stoics, Charlie Munger, and Gandhi, have emphasized the significance of continuous learning and being present in the moment. This principle will remain relevant to me in 2024 as well. So, there is no need to doubt that I will continue to share my thoughts on healthcare, healthy living, and living life to the fullest!

People Iโ€™m remembering

Florence 'Flo-Jo' Griffith Joyner

Besides healthcare and innovation, Iโ€™m a huge sports enthusiast. I celebrate people who achieve the impossible and push their disciplines to the next level.

I don't know how many times I have watched the recording of this 100-meter dash. The record still stands and it's a timeless achievement. A lot has been written about it and I have read most of it (wind-aid, line-up of competitors, step counting, velocity over the course of the race, computer-measured re-timing of the race, etc.).

Let's rewind to the legacy of Florence Griffith Joyner, a.k.a. "Flo-Jo," the iconic sprinter who left an indelible mark on athletics and style. In 1988, Flo-Jo dazzled the world at the Seoul Olympics. She shattered world records in the 100m (10.49s) and 200m (21.34s) sprints, sporting her signature one-legged running suits and vibrant nails.

Beyond her speed, Flo-Jo was known for her unique flair - think long, painted nails and eye-catching outfits. She wasn't just fast; she was a fashion trailblazer on the track. Post-Olympics, her fame skyrocketed, leading to endorsement deals, TV cameos, and even a Flo-Jo doll.

Despite her success, Flo-Jo faced doping allegations, which she vehemently denied. She never tested positive in any drug tests the International Olympic Committee conducted. In 1989, Flo-Jo retired from track, citing an inability to train at her best. She then embraced motherhood and fashion design, even designing NBA uniforms.

Tragically, she passed away in 1998 from an epileptic seizure, 25 years ago in 2023.

Today, Flo-Jo is remembered as an extraordinary athlete who revolutionized women's sprinting with unparalleled speed and unforgettable style. Over three decades later, her world records in the 100m and 200m sprints still stand, a testament to her extraordinary talent.

Flo-Jo: A legend of speed and style! ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ…๐Ÿ’จ
